The ecological pillar of sustainability is many times confused with the environment. The ecological pillar refers to policy mechanisms, and the laws and regulations surrounding environmental issues. Some of these include the protection of our natural resources including wildlife, biodiversity and ecosystem management, water and air pollution and solid waste management. Ecology is not more or less important than the society or the economy. All three pillars exist within the environment.
