Human Resource Blog: 2022

What is the purpose of HR?

In today’s society people have the impression that Human Resource (HR) is just for hiring and firing purposes (Lucid Content Team, 2019), this is far from the truth. HR to me means togetherness, and exhibits family oriented behaviors within an organization. The reason I say this is because of the bridge that the HR department builds between employers and their employees. Our drive is not only about filling the quota of employees needed, it’s finding the precise fit for the job, training them, creating an understanding atmosphere, handling payroll, fulfilling counseling duties and administering employee benefits.

Some individuals or companies may assume that anyone can do those tasks, and where that might be true in some cases, (based on a person’s background) wouldn’t you want someone who is trained in that particular field and knows what they’re actually doing? Wouldn’t you want someone to create a healthy work environment that leads to the growth of your organization? Don’t you need help in dealing with the ever changing business environment of our time?

Those people are HR professionals. We work hard to ensure that all the organization’s needs are met. We are an essential part of a business to assist with any problems that may arise within the company and to push employee development. We have the proper training in Organizational Development, Diversity and Inclusion, Strategic HR Leadership (Academy to Innovate HR, 2021) to name a few. We come into your organization with the sole purpose of creating a system that keeps the employer and employees safe and thereby happy.

The HR Department in an organization shows responsibility and care for the employees and any other similar affiliations. It lets them know that the organization values their needs and wants them to feel heard. We encourage and put systems in place for people development and innovation. This is only possible when an HR professional has had training and experience to deal with the changes that may happen within a corporation. When employees enter an organization (especially larger ones) they want to know that there is room to grow, while also developing their personal educational desires- HR supports this too. Without the proper HR strategies in place, an organization can lose their employees, which in the long run can lead to the business plummeting. This will then result in new hires to be trained and the cycle starts again, causing a reduction in the company’s profits and a further gap in the economy and neither are never good things.

An organization wants employees to provide feedback. With proper HR systems in place as previously mentioned, additional pulse meetings, team meetings and team building exercises are extremely beneficial. An HR department that does not interact with the people who fulfill the company’s duties clearly isn’t doing its job. So we make it our mission to have an open line of communication on both ends in the world of work.

There are also times when line managers must have difficult conversations with team members. Most times it is required for implementing disciplinary actions (Lucid Content Team, 2019). In cases like these, it is best to have someone as a mediator / buffer and this is where HR steps in. We help by investigating the facts, informing all stakeholders involved about the issue, and try our best to rectify the situation.

Updating policies, maintaining employee records, and supporting health and wellness, are a few of HR’s other numerous purposes. They are extremely important because it is part of the day to day activities. We want to make sure that the employees feel supported – They are assets to the company and we are there to add value and create a thriving workforce. We don’t want to take a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to our strategies. We learn to adapt and find the sweet spot to create the best environment for people in our enterprise.

HR provides structure to an organization, while ensuring the business is operated efficiently. It’s about building trust with the people involved and staying focused on the bottom line while making sure that those affiliated with the company feel appreciated. We are sure to provide proper onboarding for new employees, set competitive wages, make sure our staff has proper training for their job position and work towards supporting the company in having an all-rounded organization. All purposes mentioned are just the surface level of tasks and responsibilities that HR personnel take on.

Why would you want to function without an HR department?

Many people take to social media to vent that “HR is not your friend” – no, we’re not.

I say that with the utmost respect for the individual reading this, your HR personnel is just that, a person as well – there to do a job & that job is not to be your, nor anyone else’s, friend.

Yes, of course, human resources involves all the duties mentioned by Ms. Jeffers, plus some, and personnel ought to conduct these duties with many pleasantries…. but,

Truth be told, our sole purpose is to bridge the working body and the employer. It really boils down to just that – we’re simple people, who tend to put people first.
